Once a year we all give thanks
For all that we hold dear.
But who remembers to thank the ones
Who keep us safe from fear?
Giving thanks for wind and rain
And snow upon the ground
And food and friends and luxuries
And families all around
Are, to my mind, all well and good.
But I also thank the unknown ones
Who face the "enemy" of foreign lands
Which threaten us with mega-tons.
This Thanksgiving will be special here,
For it coincides with my birthday.
No feast will be placed on my table,
Friends and family are far away.
But in my heart and in my mind,
They'll have a special place.
All of those I love and miss
And those without a face.

Thanksgiving is not only a celebration of the pilgrims, it is also a celebration of the beauty of fall. Fall leaves, both artificial and real, make beautiful table decorations. Splashes of yellow, red and orange will brighten any table. You can use them in a grouping, such as your centerpiece, or placed sporadically around the table as if they have just fallen from the tree. You can even make place mats from them by using your glue gun to stick them to a plastic place mat.
Corn wind in the fall, come off the black lands, come off the whisper of the silk hangers, the lap of the flat spear leaves.
